Safety of traveling public at risk in Milan.

Squads of security guards from Milan’s urban transit authority ATM and personnel from the city’s municipal police force have started patrolling stations and vehicles assessed as “at risk”.

A number of violent episodes on board public transport, especially at night, have recently shocked public opinion and raised doubts about the safety of the traveling public.

The security squads will also be on the lookout for fare-dodgers, accused by ATM of contributing to the economic difficulties faced by an otherwise efficient urban transit network.

Suburban metro stations like Famagosta, Lambrate and Bisceglie, more central transport hubs like Cadorna, and surface lines such as 56 and 90-91 are the first to be patrolled.

The patrols also cover station car parks, where thefts and damage have been reported by the public and will keep a lookout for “writers” vandalizing stations and rolling stock with spray paint.

Once the security system has solved start-up hiccups, it will be extended on the basis of results obtained and critical points discovered, city councilor Anna Scavuzzo told media.
